Bombastic earthquake grammar spitting member of Nigerian House of Representatives Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon was on Tuesday April 22 silenced by the Edo Election Tribunal. The Tribunal held that INEC erred in announcing Obahiagbon of the PDP winner of the Oredo Federal Constituency that the duly elected winner is the petitioner, Mr. Bello Osagie of Action Congress who polled legitimately 3,940 votes against Obahiagbon’s 2,282 votes contrary to the 64,032 votes awarded him by INEC.
As is the stock in trade of winners of INEC bazzar, the Counsel to Obahiagbon said shortly after the ruling that his client will proceed with immediate alacrity to the court of appeal to challenge this obnoxious anti populace inconsequential ruling.
The House will miss his comic interlude and Nigerians can now understand in simple language what the members are contributing to.

In apparent bid to get to the root of the lingering power outage in Nigeria despite the whooping sum of $13.27 billion invested into the power sector between 1999-2007, the House of Representative commenced open hearing on the power sector yesterday.
At the opening of sitting slated to last one week, glaring that a German company Laymeyer, collected N369 Million Naira without proceeding to site at Mambilla Hydroelectric power project.
The Minister of State for Energy (power) Hajiya Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim while testifying, unveiled that the National Assembly had approved in 1999 N6.697 billion, N49.7bn in 2000, N70.92 in 2001, N41.692b in 2002, N50.270bn in 2003, N54.21bn in 2004, N70.131bn in 2005, N72.393 in 2006 and in 2007, N61.161bn.
These were in addition to loans of $6.464bn, euro 330.037m, $3.07m, $464m and N235.5bn from the World Bank. According to the minister,”I know that Manbila has nothing on ground. Nothing has been done there”
During the tenure of President Obasanjo, when these monies where given for the project, no contract was awarded without going through due process, headed by Dr. Oby Ezekwesili. This activity became ritualistic that Dr. Ezekwesili became known as madam due process. For the National Assembly to get to the tap root of this proplem, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili must be subpoenaed to the sitting, her job at the world bank not withstanding, after all, world bank’s loan is involved.
Meanwhile the power situation in Nigeria has twinkled from low voltage to total eclipse spanning over four days at a stretch.

Sequel to the formal desolution of the last senate and house by the President, the stage was set for the inaguration of the new house.
We did witness a lot of politicking during the time, as we saw different power-blocks trying to assert their power on who should be the number 3 &4 persons in Nigeria. It was all about party supremacy and the desire of certain elements to have the new executive president get his grip on power at all levels.
As events unfolded, two main contenders to the top senate position emerged; two-time Senator, David Mark and immediate past Governor of Benue State, George Akume. When the die was cast and Senators were beckoned upon to cast their votes openly (open ballot), different from the route they took to get into the chambers most of them were taken aback.
At the end of the voting , Senator David Mark was duely elected as the next Senate President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Read more

Gozney: We’ll Review UK Visa Process : Original Article
By Tokunbo Adedoja, 06.01.2007
With the difficulty being experienced by many Nigerian visa applicants in accessing the on-line facility - internet connectivity, the British High Commission yesterday promised to review the process so that people can go to the Visa Application Center in good time without an appointment.
Reacting to the column yesterday by THISDAY Editor, Olusegun Adeniyi, titled “The Scam in UK Visa Process”, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Sir Richard Gozney, who had earlier called before sending a written response said the process was designed for the convenience of and not against Nigerian applicants.
He also said “if an applicant pays at GTBank in advance but then explains to us by e-mail that they cannot make the application online ( [send email to info@ukvac-ng.com via gmail] info@ukvac-ng.com or [send email to visa-lagos@fco.gov.uk via gmail] visa-lagos@fco.gov.uk) and does so before 30 days are up, we will refund the money.”

The National Assembly is trying to swim in troubled waters as we hear. I hope we are all vigilant and will not allow these crop of (dis) honourable members to scuttle their so called nascent democracy.
Should they make do their threat of passing a ‘vote of no confidence’ on Prof. Iwu; it will lead to his removal as the INEC Chief. This act of legislative rascality needs check-mating; especially when the time left for the up-coming elcetion is too short. Read more

Excellent Gamblers

Are we really witnessing a situation whereby men are no longer behaving like men; not just men literally, but men that have their mind fixed on something and will go all out to get it. The way and manner politics in Nigeria is playing out in recent times, one is akin to wonder, if really these people are politicians or gamblers. Never mind, between you and me the words are synonymous as a matter of fact. However, bad the gambler maybe; the politicians are still acceptable at least in our society dis-regarding the fact that we did not vote some of them in.
The incumbent governors having transformed into ‘His Excellency’ gamblers are trying to cross the 2007 bridge with ‘two-feet’. Some have purchased the presidential nomination forms of their parties; and are either campaigning for votes or using it as a bond in the would be ‘horse trading’ that will ensue shortly. These category of trader-politicians last weekend, as we gather have also secured their party’s senatorial nominations in their different constituencies by proxy. The question then is, what are these people really afraid of that they cannot afford to be out of government? Read more
